Beyond Plein Air
This workshop pushes beyond imitation of nature and will explore the expressive use of design and color and how to broaden your perceptual skills. The goal will be to create work that is authentically your own. Many exercises will be assigned to help align your creative process your subjective responses to nature. Students will be asked to consider painting as “the practice of interiority”. Work by Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Redon, Corot, the American Tonalists, the Abstract Expressionists, Rothko, Pollock, de Kooning, to the contemporary “perceptual painters” such as Ken Kewley and Stuart Shils will be considered. We will also discuss writing excerpts from the works of Wallace Stevens, Charles W. Hawthorne, and Robert Henri. The class will begin with a lecture: Painting as Visual Poetry.
Christopher Volpe teaches at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester, NH. and teaches painting workshops in Maine, coastal New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. He completed a graduate degree in poetry from the University of New Hampshire and went on to study painting with Dennis Sheehan, Eric Aho, and Stuart Shils. He is represented in Provincetown by the Bowersock Gallery.
