“Outside The Box”- A Holiday Exhibit and Sale of Treasure Boxes created by Art Educators to Benefit Scholarships in the Visual Arts
Cape Cod is well known for its rich tradition in the Visual Arts and the Arts Educators of Cape Cod and the Islands Association play an important role in this heritage by fostering and advocating for art education programs in schools, community art centers and artists’ studios. In addition to sponsoring hands-on-activities, guest artists and art exhibits, they also donate their art at monthly meetings to raise scholarship funds to support graduating high school students who continue their education in the visual arts in college. This year, Linda Childs, a retired Barnstable art teacher, suggested that CCIAEA members transform donated wooden cheese boxes into gift boxes to raise scholarship funds.
This upcoming exhibit and silent auction of hand painted, collaged and otherwise artfully altered “Treasure Boxes”, is CCIAEA’s most recent scholarship fundraiser. Each of the 23 boxes in the exhibit was created by an art educator using a variety of materials including metal, wax, acrylics, fabric, glass, paper and natural materials. Other friends of the art teachers joined in to “decorate” a box including a high school student and even a representative of the Cape Rep Theater in Brewster with Mary Ellen Ackerman’s lovely “Brewster Flats” Oyster box! Proceeds from the sale of these unique and collectible containers will go towards supporting the students who share their teachers’ love and passion for art .The Cape Cod and Islands Art Educators Association was founded in 2003 and there are currently 45 members representing current, retired and prospective art educators in public and independent schools as well as their supporters.
The Treasure Box Exhibitors are: Lianne Biron, Alexandra Boudreau, Eileen Casey, Jody Craven Lee Connolly-Weill, Dineen D’Avena, Deborah Greenwood, John Krenik, Lenore Lyons, Peter Mann, Kathy Meyers,Carl Lopes, Nathan Olin, Angela Persechino, Kim Possee, Madison Richardson, Marcia Simpson, Daniel Springer and Bernadette Waystack.
The public is invited to attend the opening reception, Friday, December 13, from 5-7 pm at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth and to visit this inspirational exhibit from December 10 through December 23.
