Feiffer’s People

February 21 @ 7:30 pm

Legendary cartoonist, Jules Feiffer was a voice of biting sarcasm and acerbic wit for decades across the nation, appearing prominently in The Village Voice, The New York Times, and The New Yorker as well as in syndicated cartoons across the country. In 1968, it was thought that the sweeping theatrical characters exhibited in his unique style deserved a theatrical life of their own and Feiffer’s People was born.
Starting on February 14th, Eventide Theatre Company will be presenting Feiffer’s People, subtitles “Sketches and Observations” on the Gertrude Lawrence Stage in Historic Dennis Village. The show exhibits his recognizable characters that mirror our friends and ourselves doled out in equal parts of Doonesbury and Saturday Night Live, with a dash of improv thrown in for good measure. “It couldn’t be more relevant,” says director Kay DeFord, “I had the opportunity to direct this show 30 years ago and returning to the material today…it is amazing how absolutely relevant it all still is.”
The play is essentially a series of vignettes, comic monologues and sketches loosely held together by the character of Bernard and his view of life. Characters enter and exit freely in a sweeping style that allows for a world where little old ladies, professionals and even Superman can get a healthy dose of unexpected reality where the world around them can be cold, uncaring and in the case of this play, ponderously hilarious. “This show offers a unique mirror on the world of today, with eye toward politics and the absurd way in which some folks carry their own self-importance” says Chris Edwards, Eventide’s Managing Director. “The messaging will be meaningful and the characters easily recognizable to all generations, from Boomers to Millennials.”
