Greg Abate Quintet

Greg Abate returns to the Spire Center, 25 ½ Court St. in downtown Plymouth, MA on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. with his quintet. Greg’s quintet includes Kenny Wenzel/trombone, Jon Wheatley/guitar, Chris Rathbun/bass and Gary Johnson/drums.

Legendary jazz saxophonist, flutist and composer Greg Abate tours the globe 225 days a year as an international jazz recording artist. His 2004 recording “Evolution”, just one of his 18 albums, was nominated for Grammy awards in four categories. Greg has dazzled audiences around the world for nearly 50 years through his energetic performances. The Berklee College of Music graduate has built his career as one of the few remaining post-hard bop soloists. We’re excited to have Greg back to the Spire stage!

Greg played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. In 1978 Greg formed his group Channel One which was a favorite in the New England area and from there had the opportunity to play tenor sax with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under leadership of Dick Johnson from 1986 to ’87. Following this experience Greg ventured out as post hard bop soloist playing Jazz Festivals, Jazz Societies and Jazz Clubs throughout the U.S. Canada and abroad, including most of Europe, UK, and Moscow and Georgia Russia. Greg’s newest release Kindred Spirits is “Greg Abate & Phil Woods with The Tim Ray Trio” on Whaling City Sound Records

Greg is also an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island College and is also a very active jazz clinician with co. sponsorship from the Conn -Selmer Instrument Co., conducting workshops and master classes through the U.S and abroad. Greg has been inducted into the RI MUSIC HALL OF FAME 2016.

Tickets are $25; advance purchase is recommended, seating is limited to capacity.  The Spire is handicap accessible, public parking is available streetside, and in public lots near the venue.
