The Provincetown Public Library, in affiliation with Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York is excited to offer a new program that will bring the spirit of swing to the community one Saturday afternoon a month throughout the winter.
The Provincetown Public Library will dive into a three-month line up of concerts made available by Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Digital Concert Network. All concerts are performed by the incomparable Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO), led by Wynton Marsalis. This is music to energize your spirit! Your host, Mary DeRocco, will facilitate discussion specific to each concert.
On Saturday, February 1, the Saturday Afternoon Jazz concerts will kick off with The Best of Count Basie and Duke Ellington’s Black, Brown and Beige. In this show, we will highlight the extraordinary repertoire of two of jazz music’s most legendary names: the bandleaders Duke Ellington and Count Basie. We delve into the beloved swinging classics of Count Basie’s bands, and then move into Duke Ellington’s magnum opus: Black, Brown, and Beige, a concert work that challenged America’s notions of what jazz composition could be and what it could represent.
