SUMMARY:Won't You Be My Neighbor
DESCRIPTION:For over 30 years\, Fred Rogers\, an unassuming minister\, puppeteer\, writer and producer\, was beamed daily into homes across America. In his beloved television program\, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood\, Fred and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues\, in a simple\, direct fashion. There hadn’t been anything like Mr. Rogers on television before and there hasn’t been since. \nThrough interviews with friends\, family\, and colleagues\, the film examines Rogers’ philosophy of using television to teach children about empathy\, kindness\, and acceptance\, while also highlighting his personal struggles\, such as self-doubt. The documentary also uses archival footage to show his impact\, including his work to advocate for public television.

SUMMARY:Thirsty
DESCRIPTION:The Provincetown Film Society is thrilled to announce a special one-night-only screening of the musical biopic THIRSTY on Wednesday\, July 2nd at 7:00 PM at Waters Edge Cinema. This benefit event for star Thirsty Burlington will feature a live\, in-person introduction by Thirsty and producer Lisa Thomas.  \nBased on the remarkable true story of Scott Townsend—better known by fans as Thirsty Burlington—THIRSTY is a raw\, musical journey through gender\, survival\, and self-expression. From growing up as a “girly-boy” in the housing projects of Cambridge\, MA\, under the volatile care of his single mother\, to becoming a beloved drag icon performing in Provincetown with a spot-on Cher impersonation\, Scott’s life unfolds in vivid\, song-filled chapters. \nDirected with flair and sensitivity\, the film captures not only the challenges of a gender-nonconforming youth in a harsh world but also the joy\, triumph\, and power of performance. THIRSTY is as entertaining as it is emotional—a dazzling ode to becoming one’s truest self.

SUMMARY:Rise Above: film screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:Rise Above follows Cape Cod music icon Sarah Swain’s deeply moving journey of losing her mother to cancer and how that experience motivated her to make a difference in her community for others diagnosed with cancer. \nAs a local musician\, Sarah Swain first created the Cape Cod Women’s Music Festival in 2012 to raise money for cancer patients. Wanting to do more to help her community\, in 2014\, Sarah founded the non-profit Cape Wellness Collaborative\, under the guidance of attorney Bruce Bierhans. CWC works\nwith a team of outstanding local wellness professionals to provide free-of-charge integrative wellness therapies to those facing cancer on Cape Cod. Sarah’s goal continues to be helping each patient with cancer feel better through integrative therapies that “aim to treat the whole person\, not just the symptoms of disease.” \nSarah’s work has made a broad reach within the Cape Cod community and beyond. In 2019\, Sarah and Cape Wellness Collaborative were awarded the Massachusetts Nonprofit Council’s Innovation Award. In 2020 Sarah received the Massachusetts Red Cross Community Hero Award\, and\, in 2021 she received the National Women’s Council of Churches Humanitarian Award.

SUMMARY:Metropolitan Opera Live in HD: Richard Strauss’ Salome
DESCRIPTION:Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy\, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth\, one of Europe’s leading opera directors\, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive\, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light.

Films in the series\, both recent and vintage\, are chosen around central themes\, but the focus is on films about artists and creativity\, and films that are themselves works of art. \nAn American in Paris (1951) \nDirected by Vincente Minnelli. Produced by Arthur Freed. Story and screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner. With Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. Choreographed by Gene Kelly. 1 hour\, 54 minutes. \nThis romantic tale of an American painter in Paris (Gene Kelly) who falls for a sweet parisienne (Leslie Caron) is really a meditation on love\, art\, and money — in other words\, Hollywood. It’s also the ultimate expression of studio artistry: directed by Vincente Minnelli with exquisite taste\, lavishly produced by MGM’s Freed unit in Los Angeles\, inventively choreographed by Kelly\, and inspired by George Gershwin’s luscious jazz-inflected score.

DESCRIPTION:The Provincetown Film Art Series\, now in its 18th year\, is sponsored by the Provincetown Film Society (PFS) and Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) and curated and hosted by film scholar Howard Karren. Films in the series\, both recent and vintage\, are chosen around central themes\, but the focus is on films about artists and creativity\, and films that are themselves works of art. \nThe Tale of Zatoichi (1962) \nDirected by Kenji Misumi. Screenplay by Minoru Inuzuka\, based on the short story by Kan Shimozawa. With Shintaro Katsu. In Japanese\, subtitled. B&W. 1 hour\, 35 minutes. \nIn Japan’s pre-Western Edo period in the mid-1800s\, Zatoichi is a blind itinerant samurai with an unflinching sense of honor and an otherworldly mastery of swordsmanship. His blindness is anything but a disability: Zatoichi is almost always underestimated by those he’s up against. This 1962 classic is the first of a 26-film series\, in which Zatoichi is mostly played by the great Shintaro Katsu.

With Fassbinder and Peter Chatel. In German\, subtitled. 2 hours\, 4 minutes. \nThe ’70s movies of Rainer Werner Fassbinder are dazzling as a whole and devastating individually. Most are fables of soullessness set in postwar West Germany\, and so is this story of a poor gay carny who wins the lottery and is viciously exploited\, played with sullen passion by Fassbinder himself.
