SUMMARY:Provincetown Film Art Series: Isadora
DESCRIPTION:The Provincetown Film Art Series\, now in its 18th year\, is sponsored by the Provincetown Film Society (PFS) and Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) and curated and hosted by film scholar Howard Karren. Films in the series\, both recent and vintage\, are chosen around central themes\, but the focus is on films about artists and creativity\, and films that are themselves works of art. \nIsadora (1968) \nDirected by Karel Reisz. With Vanessa Redgrave\, Jason Robards\, and James Fox. 2 hours\, 20 minutes (European cut). \nIsadora Duncan\, a pioneer of modern dance\, was a free spirit in her art and in her romantic relationships — and way ahead of her time. She lived and died famously\, and\, as fearlessly played by Vanessa Redgrave (and expressively directed by British New Wave stalwart Karel Reisz)\, she’s neither saint nor satyr but a wonder nonetheless.

\nHester Street (1975) \nWritten and directed by Joan Micklin Silver\, based on a novella by Abraham Cahan. With Carol Kane and Stephen Keats. In Yiddish and English\, subtitled. B&W. 1 hour\, 30 minutes. \nJoan Micklin Silver’s feature debut is a low-budget gem: the story of a Russian Jewish immigrant (Carol Kane)\, who comes to New York with a young son only to find that she’s no longer compatible with her Americanized husband\, who scorns her Old World ways.

\nHowards End (1992) \nDirected by James Ivory. Screenplay by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala\, based on the novel by E.M. Forster. With Emma Thompson\, Helena Bonham Carter\, Vanessa Redgrave\, and Anthony Hopkins. 2 hours\, 22 minutes. \nOf Merchant Ivory’s three brilliant E.M. Forster adaptations — A Room With a View\, Maurice\, and Howards End — the latter one\, which is equally as romantic and scathing as the previous two — offers the richest tableau of the British bourgeoisie at the dawn of the modern era.

With James Ivory. Documentary. 1 hour\, 52 minutes. \nDirector James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant were a 20th-century curiosity: a filmmaking powerhouse and a gay couple. Their triumphant careers began humbly in India and reached a critical and commercial peak with exquisite adaptations of classic novels with screenplays by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and scores by Richard Robbins. Stephen Soucy’s documentary presents a star-studded collection of actors and collaborators who create a compelling\, deeply personal picture of Merchant and Ivory’s lives in art.

SUMMARY:The Waste No Water Library Tour visits Snow Library
DESCRIPTION:The Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Technology Center (MASSTC) is coming to the Craine Room of Snow Library as part of their Waste No Water Library Tour\, a Cape-wide library series to engage the public in over 10 Cape towns\, focusing on the wastewater successes and challenges each town faces. \nSpeakers from MASSTC will kick off the conversation with a showing of the recent Scientific American documentary “Yellow Tide\,” which features their efforts. After a short presentation on the current wastewater landscape\, they’ll focus on IA septic systems that remove nitrogen from waste\, as well as urine-diverting and composting toilets. Toward the end\, there will be an open Q&A with attendees to ask any and all wastewater questions. Anyone who is interested in the topic of wastewater and wants to be part of positive change on the Cape is encouraged to attend and learn more about how individual efforts fit into the Cape and Islands’ ongoing wastewater puzzle. \nAdmission is free and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Film Screening: We Still Live Here by Anne Makepeace
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nWe Still Live Here – Âs Nutayuneân is the story of the revitalization of the Wampanoag language\, the first time a language with no native speakers has been revived in this country. The Wampanoag’s ancestors ensured the survival of the Pilgrims in New England and lived to regret it. Nevertheless\, through resilience and courage they kept their identity alive and remained on their ancestral lands. Now a cultural revival is taking place. \nThe story begins in 1994 when Jessie Little Doe\, an intrepid\, 30-something Wampanoag social worker\, began having recurring dreams: familiar-looking people from another time addressing her in an incomprehensible language. Jessie was perplexed and a little annoyed — why couldn’t they speak English? Later\, she realized they were speaking Wampanoag\, a language no one had used for more than a century. \nThese events sent her and members of the Aquinnah and Mashpee Wampanoag communities on an odyssey that would uncover hundreds of documents written in their ancestral language\, lead Jessie to a earn herself a master’s degree in linguistics at MIT\, and result in something that had never been done before – bringing a language alive again in an American Indian community after many generations with no native speakers. With commitment\, study groups\, classes\, and communitywide effort\, many are approaching fluency. Jessie’s young daughter Mae is the first native speaker in more than a hundred years. \nAbout the filmmaker:\nAnne Makepeace has been a writer\, producer\, and director of award-winning independent films for more than 20 years. Her films include We Still Live Here – Âs Nutayuneân which won the Full Frame Inspiration Award and the Moving Mountains Prize at Telluride MountainFilm; I.M. Pei: Building China Modern\, (PBS/American Masters 2010); Rain in a Dry Land (lead show on P.O.V. 2007) winner of the Full Frame Working Films Award\, Emmy nomination; Robert Capa in Love and War\, (PBS/American Masters 2003)\, national Prime Time Emmy Award; Coming to Light (PBS/American Masters 2003)\, short-listed for an Oscar and winner of many prizes; and Baby It’s You (lead show on P.O.V. 1998)\, Whitney Biennial 2000. Makepeace also wrote the screenplay for Thousand Pieces of Gold and the American Experience documentary Ishi\, the Last Yahi.
