SUMMARY:The Waste No Water Library Tour visits Snow Library
DESCRIPTION:The Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Technology Center (MASSTC) is coming to the Craine Room of Snow Library as part of their Waste No Water Library Tour\, a Cape-wide library series to engage the public in over 10 Cape towns\, focusing on the wastewater successes and challenges each town faces. \nSpeakers from MASSTC will kick off the conversation with a showing of the recent Scientific American documentary “Yellow Tide\,” which features their efforts. After a short presentation on the current wastewater landscape\, they’ll focus on IA septic systems that remove nitrogen from waste\, as well as urine-diverting and composting toilets. Toward the end\, there will be an open Q&A with attendees to ask any and all wastewater questions. Anyone who is interested in the topic of wastewater and wants to be part of positive change on the Cape is encouraged to attend and learn more about how individual efforts fit into the Cape and Islands’ ongoing wastewater puzzle. \nAdmission is free and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Film Screening: We Still Live Here by Anne Makepeace
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nWe Still Live Here – Âs Nutayuneân is the story of the revitalization of the Wampanoag language\, the first time a language with no native speakers has been revived in this country. The Wampanoag’s ancestors ensured the survival of the Pilgrims in New England and lived to regret it. Nevertheless\, through resilience and courage they kept their identity alive and remained on their ancestral lands. Now a cultural revival is taking place. \nThe story begins in 1994 when Jessie Little Doe\, an intrepid\, 30-something Wampanoag social worker\, began having recurring dreams: familiar-looking people from another time addressing her in an incomprehensible language. Jessie was perplexed and a little annoyed — why couldn’t they speak English? Later\, she realized they were speaking Wampanoag\, a language no one had used for more than a century. \nThese events sent her and members of the Aquinnah and Mashpee Wampanoag communities on an odyssey that would uncover hundreds of documents written in their ancestral language\, lead Jessie to a earn herself a master’s degree in linguistics at MIT\, and result in something that had never been done before – bringing a language alive again in an American Indian community after many generations with no native speakers. With commitment\, study groups\, classes\, and communitywide effort\, many are approaching fluency. Jessie’s young daughter Mae is the first native speaker in more than a hundred years. \nAbout the filmmaker:\nAnne Makepeace has been a writer\, producer\, and director of award-winning independent films for more than 20 years. Her films include We Still Live Here – Âs Nutayuneân which won the Full Frame Inspiration Award and the Moving Mountains Prize at Telluride MountainFilm; I.M. Pei: Building China Modern\, (PBS/American Masters 2010); Rain in a Dry Land (lead show on P.O.V. 2007) winner of the Full Frame Working Films Award\, Emmy nomination; Robert Capa in Love and War\, (PBS/American Masters 2003)\, national Prime Time Emmy Award; Coming to Light (PBS/American Masters 2003)\, short-listed for an Oscar and winner of many prizes; and Baby It’s You (lead show on P.O.V. 1998)\, Whitney Biennial 2000. Makepeace also wrote the screenplay for Thousand Pieces of Gold and the American Experience documentary Ishi\, the Last Yahi.

SUMMARY:Woods Hole Film Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 33rd Woods Hole Film Festival kicks off on Saturday\, July 27 and runs through Saturday\, August 3. Festival-goers have the opportunity to see as many feature length and short films as time allows during the 8-day festival! Besides film screenings\, there are Q&As with filmmakers\, panel discussions\, workshops\, parties featuring some of the best musical acts from Cape Cod\, and master classes\, including one with Filmmaker-In-Residence Doug Blush\, award-winning director\, producer\, editor\, writer and cinematographer and Oscar winner for such documentaries as 20 Feet from Stardom\, The Elephant Whisperers\, and Period. End Of Sentence (he also executive produced three of this year’s festival entries\, Champions of the Golden Valley\, First We Bombed New Mexico and Counted Out). \nIf after eight days you aren’t able to watch all the films you were interested in seeing\, or if you can’t make it to the festival in-person\, never fear: many films will also be available for streaming on the Festival’s virtual platform immediately following the in-person screenings from Sunday\, August 4 through Sunday\, August 11! \nAs the longest-running film festival on the Cape and Islands and one of the oldest in New England\, the Woods Hole Film Festival was an early leader in promoting the films and careers of emerging\, independent filmmakers\, especially those with ties to New England\, and specifically Cape Cod and the Islands—a mission that continues to this day. \nThe Festival’s nearly 1000 submissions were narrowed down to a thought-provoking program of 47 feature-length and 73 short dramas\, comedies\, documentaries\, and animation from 19 countries—with 6 World\, 2 US\, and 59 New England premieres—by both first-time and veteran filmmakers. \nFilms subjects range from such topics as family and love to mystery and the supernatural—with everything in-between. The festival’s hallmark thematic strands include films about music and musicians\, films about science in conjunction with the Festival’s “Bringing Science to the Screen” program\, and films about social and political activism and films with New England connections.\nThe Festival’s intimate environment and seaside setting provide audience members and filmmakers from around the world the opportunity to watch films together and to engage face to face in thought-provoking and meaningful conversations during the post-film Q&As\, as well as on the street—you never know who you might bump into!

SUMMARY:FREE Documentary Screening: The Life and Times of Alice Stallknecht
DESCRIPTION:Alice Stallknecht painted Chatham. Townspeople\, birds\, boats\, and weathervanes were her inspiration. Fiercely independent\, Stallknecht created a body of work that is unique but also earned her place amongst American Regionalist Painters. American Regionalism became one of the dominant national art movements in the 1930s. American Regionalism strived to represent the conditions of working class Americans. \nWith the start of the Atwood Museum’s 2024 season\, the Atwood Museum thought of no better way to celebrate than by collaborating with our neighbor\, the Chatham Orpheum Theater\, to showcase the most-represented artist in our collection: Alice Stallknecht. Come watch a fascinating\, thoughtful\, and informative documentary produced by the Atwood Museum. And come by any day this season to witness an impressive collection of her colorful works any Open day in our Stallknecht Mural Barn. We cannot wait to see you all there! Watch a trailer for the event here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N3wuje5DZY.
