SUMMARY:When Climate Disaster Strikes
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a major natural disaster leaves communities isolated and shattered with staggering devastation? Celo was one such community\, a remote intentional community founded as a land trust 88 years ago in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Helene’s impact had the opposite effect of the COVID pandemic — it brought people together to work in-person and cooperatively. Educator Tal Galton shares his compelling story of survival and rebirth. \nFree Admission

SUMMARY:Radio Diaries - An Evening of Stories and Sound with Joe Richman
DESCRIPTION:We learn to listen before we’re born. Sound is our first language. There is a special magic and intimacy in audio storytelling. In the age of podcasts\, how do we create good stories in sound? And what can storytelling skills teach us about being a better human being? \nJoin us for an evening of stories and an exploration of the nature of audio storytelling with Radio Diaries producer Joe Richman \nJoe Richman is a Peabody Award-winning producer and reporter and the founder of Radio Diaries\, a non-profit organization. For two decades\, Radio Diaries has helped to pioneer a model for working with people to document their own lives for public radio. Joe has collaborated with teenagers and octogenarians\, prisoners and prison guards\, gospel preachers and bra saleswomen\, the famous and the unknown. Through his career\, he has interviewed hundreds of people\, from a seltzer delivery man to a Civil War widow to Nelson Mandela. The LA Times called Joe “a kind of Studs Terkel of the airwaves.”
