Derek will regale us with spooky tales of haunted happenings\, stories\, and locations of people and places around Cape Cod. He will tell us about his work as a tour guide and researcher of paranormal activity in and around the Cape! \nTour guide and lecturer\, Derek Bartlett of West Barnstable\, is president of the Cape and Islands Paranormal Research Society\, and has been studying the paranormal for years; he founded Barnstable Haunted Tours in 2001. Chatting about his hobby with others years ago\, Bartlett says people began to ask him to bring them around—and pretty soon he had a small business underway. Today\, some 400 people take part in the tours he gives each summer. We are thrilled to have him come speak at the Atwood Museum.

Books will be available for purchase and signing afterwards.\nMichael Pregot is an educator\, writer\, and admirer of local history. Dr. Pregot has intensely researched this subject to create a comprehensive examination of this often-overlooked part of Cape Cod history. The book discusses religious views\, political platforms\, economic factors\, and social movements that existed during the pre-Civil War period to help readers gain insight into the mindset of the era. It also highlights several profiles of notable Black enslaved individuals living in Massachusetts and demonstrates the enormous contributions they made to the overall growth of our state and country.

For two decades\, Radio Diaries has helped to pioneer a model for working with people to document their own lives for public radio. Joe has collaborated with teenagers and octogenarians\, prisoners and prison guards\, gospel preachers and bra saleswomen\, the famous and the unknown. Through his career\, he has interviewed hundreds of people\, from a seltzer delivery man to a Civil War widow to Nelson Mandela. The LA Times called Joe “a kind of Studs Terkel of the airwaves.”

We will then hear from this year’s guest speaker\, Julie Hambrook Berkman\, PhD\, Project Director of the Pond and Cyanobacteria Monitoring Programs at the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC)\, who will discuss cyanobacteria.  \nShe will present key facts about how it affects our ponds\, including a brief review of the biology and ecology of these organisms\, how blooms are produced\, the APCC processing techniques and risk levels\, as well as potential causes of cyanobacteria in individual ponds and potential actions to prevent them. Time will be allowed for questions and answers.  \nThe BPC Annual Meeting will be held at the Cape Cod Bible Alliance Church\, 3600 Main Street\, Brewster\, and is free to BPC members\, so be sure to reserve your spot. DESCRIPTION:How can travel research\, interviews\, images\, personal and national archives\, sounds\, music\, and film techniques inspire our artistic process and ways of knowing? \nPlease join us for a conversation with filmmaker\, writer\, and NYU professor\, Mo Ogrodnik\, about her inter-disciplinary approach to research and making that informs her work across artistic mediums. \nWhile living in Abu Dhabi\, Ogrodnik traveled to the Philippines and Ethiopia\, where she documented her findings through photographs and oral interviews that later informed scenes\, character psychology\, and specifics of place featured in her recent text-image piece for the Paris Review and her debut novel\, GULF (released in May by Simon & Schuster). \nOgrodnik’s experience offers a roadmap for artists of any discipline seeking immersive experiences to inform their work\, illuminating the importance of inquiry\, curiosity and proximity in the development of contemporary narrative.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, July 8th\, for our July ‘Tuesday Talks’ lecture with military historian\, Joe Yukna. The lecture\, entitled ‘Gunpowder and Greasepaint’ is perfect for a diverse audience. Joe will tell a story that takes you from the firing range at Scorton Neck to the stage lights of Broadway! \nCome and hear the thrilling tale of how the 1st Composite Anti-Aircraft Demonstration Battalion\, Royal Artillery\, and star of stage and screen\, Gertrude Lawrence\, came together on Cape Cod in 1943. Joe will also be displaying items from CCMM for folks to look at before and after the talk. \nAbout Joe Yukna: \nJoe Yukna’s interest in the military history of Cape Cod began when he worked as a Department of Defense Police Officer on Camp Edwards/Otis ANGB in the late 1980s. Joe Yukna with colleague Jerry Ellis then embarked on a venture to create a military museum. They secured two barracks and six surrounding acres on Camp Edwards for the project. September 11th ended that venture. After a hiatus\, they got back to work. Yukna has been collecting artifacts and information on military activities here on the Cape and the overseas activities of units that trained here. He has also helped various historical societies with military displays. After leaving the D.O.D. Police force\, Joe started his own dog training business and is better known as ‘Joe the Dogman’. He is the son of a WWII /Korean War Navy Veteran and the Father of an Army War on Terror Veteran.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Craine Room for a reading by Albert Groom\, who recently published his first book of poetry\, ‘Eggplant: Golden or Scorned.’ \nAlbert is a Cape Cod native. His writing presents a deep and reflective voice that examines and processes his past struggles with addiction\, depression\, and subsequent recovery. His unique approach to poetry turns it into a therapeutic tool he uses to come to terms with life’s various challenges\, creating poems that find universal themes within personal experiences.  \nAlbert first discovered the joy of being a poet at an open mic event at Brook’s Park in Harwich. His work has previously been featured in Provincetown Public Library’s Photo and Poem series and was selected as Brewster Ladies Library’s March 2024 Poem of the Month. BPC representatives will explain why there is a need for a CWMP\, its scope and goals\, and projected costs\, as well as the risks of not having one\, and answer any questions you may have. Equally important is that we will encourage an open dialogue and look forward to hearing any concerns and questions you might have. This proposal will be presented at the town’s Spring Town Meeting on May 5 for approval. DESCRIPTION:Please join National Park archeologist\, Dan Zoto\, on March 25th at 5PM for an exciting ‘Tuesday Talks’. Dan will discuss his work for the National Park Service as well as provide an overview of archeology at the Cape Cod National Seashore. Dan will explain how the park conducts archeology within a cultural resource management framework such that it ensures the protection of its archeological resources. The talk will summarize past and present archeological research and provide insights into Native American and Euro-American land use on the Outer Cape. Dan will also be open to questions and discussion at the end of his presentation.

In this role\, Jon also serves as the Town Planner and the Housing and Planning Office’s representative on the Brewster Water Resource Task Force. His presentation will include an overview of his responsibilities as Brewster’s Town Planner\, current projects such as the recently updated Water Quality Protection District (WQPD) Bylaw and its proposed amendments\, and a discussion of current and future Planning Department challenges and concerns. This event is free and open to the public\, and will be held at the Brewster Ladies Library\,1822 Main Street\, Brewster\, on Wednesday\, March 12th\, from 3:30 – 5 PM. DESCRIPTION:Join representatives from Sharing Kindness in the Craine Room for a presentation that covers “the basics” of grief: what it is\, how it impacts our brains and bodies\, and how we can support people in our lives who are going through it. Sharing Kindness is a nonprofit dedicated to providing mental health education and grief support throughout Cape Cod. \nGrief is a natural response to loss. Yet many bereaved people report feeling misunderstood and abandoned by their friends and communities due to a lack of education about the needs of the grieving. This program is designed to give attendees helpful tools for dealing with grief in their lives while discussing their experiences with it.  \nAdmission is free and all are welcome. Resources are available as part of the event\, including a Child’s Grief Book Pack gifted by Sharing Kindness to each host library.

SUMMARY:The Local Journalism Project Winter Reading Series
DESCRIPTION:Widely regarded as one of America’s leading nature writers\, Robert Finch published eight books of essays and twice received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Radio Writing for his weekly radio commentaries on WCAI. Described in the New York Times Book Review as “a keen and passionate observer” and “today’s best\, most perceptive Cape Cod writer in a line extending all the way back to Henry David Thoreau” by the Christian Science Monitor\, Bob was also a beloved member of the Wellfleet community. \nWe will gather at the Kohlberg House (courtesy of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust) overlooking the beach that Bob so lovingly wrote about. Indira Ganesan\, Chris Wisniewski and Paul Greenspan will read several selections of Bob’s work and Kathy Shorr will give us a sneak preview of Bob’s soon-to-be published last book. \nTickets are $30. All funds from this event benefit the Local Journalism Project\, the nonprofit partner of the Provincetown Independent. \nThe space is intimate and tickets are limited. Directions to the house will be sent with registration confirmation.

DESCRIPTION:Come to the Craine Room of Snow Library for a talk by local author Mike Bernard. Mike is the author of five books\, three of which make up “The Boston Irish Belt Trilogy\,” a historical fiction series about love\, friendship\, and family in South Boston. \nThe start of what Mike affectionately refers to as his ‘midlife crisis’ writing career began after his children went off to college. Now\, he has multiple books and screenplays under his name\, with his work recognized by the PAGE International Screenplay Competition\, Nantucket Film Festival\, and other literary organizations. In his talk\, Mike will discuss his “Boston Irish Belt Trilogy” novels. He’ll discuss his local inspirations\, writing process\, Hollywood screenplay adaptations\, Irish Catholic guilt\, passive-aggressive mothers\, and more. \nAdmission is free and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:A Paranormal Journey Across Land and Sea with Don DeCristofaro
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Craine Room for an evening of paranormal stories and naval history with Don DeCristofaro. Don has been a paranormal investigator for over 20 years. As a member of the Greater Boston Paranormal Associates\, he facilitates paranormal investigations\, tours\, and events aboard the USS Salem in Quincy\, MA. Once a WWII Heavy Cruiser\, the USS Salem is now home to the United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum. She is also considered to be one of the most actively haunted locations in New England.  \nDon’s expertise on the USS Salem goes far beyond the hauntings within her. Having long been fascinated by this historic ship\, Don has extensive knowledge of her history and the many adventures she’s been on\, from her creation to her transformation into a museum. Skeptics and believers alike will find something of interest in Don’s recounting of paranormal investigations and the history of the USS Salem herself.
