SUMMARY:MA Great Reads X Atwood Museum Book Discussion: Stamped from the Beginning
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursdays\, 09/18\, and 09/25 from 6pm-7pm at the Atwood Museum for a discussion series on the stunningly illustrated graphic-novel Stamped from the Beginning: A Graphic History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi\, adapted and illustrated by Joel Christian Gill. This book is appropriate for age young adult and up!\nRacism has persisted throughout history—but so have antiracist efforts to dismantle it. Through deep research and a gripping narrative that illuminates the lives of five key American figures\, preeminent historian Ibram X. Kendi—in collaboration with award-winning historian and comic artist Joel Christian Gill—reveals how understanding and improving the world cannot happen without identifying and facing the racist forces that shape it. The graphic-novel adaptation of Dr. Kendi’s groundbreaking Stamped from the Beginning explores\, with vivid clarity and dimensionality\, the living history of America\, and how we can learn from the past to work toward a more equitable\, antiracist future.\nParticipants will be provided with a free copy of the graphic novel and will have the opportunity to ask the graphic novelist questions in a virtual Q&A session in September! This discussion series is part of the 2025 MA Great Reads program\, sponsored by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. To register\, email vshakes.atwood@gmail.com or swing by the Atwood Museum to pick up a copy of your book while supplies last.

SUMMARY:Cape Symphony: A New Era
DESCRIPTION:Masterpiece 1\nOur season opens with American spirit\, youthful brilliance\, and timeless orchestral mastery. Join us to usher in a new era of exceptional performances at Cape Symphony! \nWe begin with John Williams’ stirring arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner\, followed by George Walker’s bold and dynamic Pageant and Proclamation\, commissioned by the New Jersey Symphony in 1997. Rising star Sofia Hernández-Williams\, just 11 years old\, takes the stage for Saint-Saëns’ passionate and virtuosic Cello Concerto No. 1\, a favorite of virtuoso cellists since its first performance in Paris in 1873. After an intermission\, Brahms’s triumphant Symphony No. 1 brings the performance to a powerful close. \nTicketholders are invited to a preconcert talk about the program\, led by Assistant Conductor Joe Marchio. The talk begins one hour before the concert. \nProgram\nThe Star-Spangled Banner\nARR. JOHN WILLIAMS \nPageant and Proclamation\nGEORGE WALKER \nCello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor\nCAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS \nSymphony No. 1 in C Minor\nJOHANNES BRAHMS \nSofia Hernández-Williams\, Cello\nSofia Hernández-Williams studies at Worcester’s Joy of Music Program and Boston’s Project String Training Education Program and has attended chamber music programs at Rivers Conservatory and Groton Hill Music. In 2024\, she studied with Dr. Anzel Gerber in Vienna\, Austria. \nSofia is a member of the Repertory Orchestra at Boston Youth Symphonies and principal cellist of the Joy of Music Youth Orchestra. The list of her competition accolades is growing quickly. Sofia made her concert debut in 2024\, performing Haydn’s C Major Cello Concerto with Worcester’s Seven Hills Symphony\, and gave a second performance of the concerto with the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra. In 2025\, she performed the final movement of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C as a soloist with the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra as part of their Musical Superheroes concert. \nBeyond the cello\, Sofia enjoys mathematics\, gardening\, writing\, piano\, voice\, and tinkering with her father’s violin-making tools. \nDavid Charles Abell\, Conductor\nDavid Charles Abell is an internationally renowned conductor whose career spans classical music\, opera\, film\, and musical theatre. Known for his theatrical yet disciplined style\, he has collaborated with leading artists including Bryn Terfel\, Diana Damrau\, Judi Dench\, Idina Menzel\, and Josh Groban. \nHe has conducted many of the world’s top orchestras\, among them the London Symphony\, Royal Philharmonic\, Wiener Symphoniker\, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France\, Atlanta Symphony\, Hong Kong Philharmonic\, and Boston Pops. \nA regular at the BBC Proms\, his televised appearances include Sondheim at 80 and the War Horse Prom. SUMMARY:You\, Me\, & Harry - Celebrating the Music of Harry Chapin
DESCRIPTION:“You\, Me\, & Harry – Celebrating the Music of Harry Chapin\,” has received significant acclaim from both longtime fans of Harry Chapin and audiences newly introduced to his music. The show includes little-known anecdotes and backstories about Harry and his story songs. All of Chapin’s well-known hits are there\, including Cat’s in the Cradle\, Taxi\, W.O.L.D.\, and many more! If you love Harry\, you will love Lou’s show. If you are new to Harry\, You\, me\, & Harry is the perfect introduction. \nBio: Lou Antonucci was inspired by The Beatles to pursue guitar playing and has been performing onstage since the age of thirteen. In his late teens\, he redirected his musical focus from rock ‘n roll to folk rock\, drawing influence from artists such as Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, James Taylor\, Jim Croce\, and Harry Chapin. During this period\, Lou would perform in a multitude of venues\, including bars\, restaurants\, supper clubs\, and colleges\, consistently honing his skills and captivating audiences.\nLou’s early musical achievements would secure him a prestigious position as the resident singer-guitarist at The Holiday House nightclub\, located just outside of Pittsburgh\, PA. At the time\, it was the largest nightclub in the United States\, second only to the Copacabana in New York City. This role provided him with the opportunity to collaborate and learn from prominent national acts\, including esteemed performers such as Ben Vereen\, Charo\, David Brenner\, Connie Stevens\, and Harry Chapin. As a result\, Lou effortlessly demonstrates a distinctive ability to captivate his audience. His compelling and engaging stage presence ensures that each audience member feels intimately involved in the performance\, much like Chapin achieved in his time.\n\n\n$20\, $25 at the door.
