SUMMARY:Tuesday Talks: The Orpheum Theater: A Chatham Landmark
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT: \nSpeaker: Kevin McLain\nWhere: At the Orpheum Theater\nWhen: Tuesday\, January 20th\, 2026 – 5:00 PM\nJoin us for the first Tuesday Talks lecture of the year live at the Orpheum Theater. Our speaker Kevin McLain\, the Executive Director of the Orpheum\, will give us a tour through the remarkable history of the Theater\, one of Main Street’s greatest landmarks. He will walk visitors through its opening\, closing\, and triumphant return to a vital cultural institution in Chatham. \nThis lecture will take place on site at the Orpheum Theater. \nAbout Kevin McClain: \nIn 2013 after 15 years as Director of Technical and Creative Services for Chatham Bars Inn\, he became the Executive Director of the newly restored Chatham Orpheum Theater. Over the last 12 ½ years he has turned the historic theater\, built in 1916 into one of the top independent\, community theaters in the country. With a focus on the community\, the theater has hosted hundreds of fundraisers and events for local groups and non-profits. In 2021 Kevin was given the Fred Ebbett Lifetime Achievement Award by the Cape Cod Baseball League in recognition of his 20 years as producer of the annual Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame ceremony. \nAbout The Orpheum Theater: \nThe original Orpheum Theater opened in 1916 as Chatham’s first and only movie house. From the early days of silent films through the blockbuster era of JAWS\, our Main Street movie theater was a magical place for 72 years — a year-round destination where generations of Cape Cod families and summer visitors could enjoy gripping dramas\, slapstick comedies\, joyous musicals or swashbuckling adventure films week after week. \nIn 1938\, the building was purchased by Interstate Theaters Corporation and became known as the Chatham Theater. Then in 1987\, like so many village movie theaters on Cape Cod\, it ceased operations\, went dark\, and eventually became a CVS pharmacy. The entire town mourned the loss of this iconic Main Street treasure\, but the tradition was never forgotten. \nThe return of the Chatham Orpheum Theater began in November 2011\, right after CVS vacated the historic theater building at 637 Main Street. A local grass roots team was quickly formed and established a non-profit organization with an audacious goal: To raise funds needed to buy the original Orpheum building and bring back movies to Main Street.\nLed by founding president Naomi M. Turner and a local team of volunteers\, the first $1.3 million was raised to purchase the building in April 2012. The team then launched a more daunting challenge — raising the projected $4 million needed to restore and rehabilitate the 100-year-old wooden structure as a modern\, first-class cinema that would feature first-run major motion pictures plus art house movies\, independent productions\, provocative documentaries\, and the works of local filmmakers.

SUMMARY:Napi's Winter Lecture Series: Seagrass Conservation
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Coastal Studies’ popular Napi’s Winter Lecture Series will resume Wednesday\, January 21 at 5 pm with a talk by CCS marine ecologist Dr. Agnes Mittermayr\, who will speak about the “Global Importance of Seagrass Conservation.” \nCalled the “forgotten ecosystem\,” seagrasses play a vital role in the health of our oceans and the well-being of coastal communities. They stabilize shorelines\, protect against storm surges\, purify water\, support rich marine biodiversity\, and provide nursery grounds for fish and shellfish that sustain global fisheries. \nThis popular winter lecture series\, historically held at Napi’s Restaurant in Provincetown\, is now hosted at the Center’s Hiebert Marine Laboratory\, 5 Holway Avenue\, Provincetown. \nThis is a free event and will also be available on Zoom. Click here to register.

SUMMARY:The Suitcase Junket
DESCRIPTION:The Suitcase Junket developed in the tension between the grand and the solitary. Grand in imagery\, sound\, and staging. Solitary in thrift and self-reliance. NPR calls Matt Lorenz a “master of musical imagination.” What instruments he requires\, Lorenz builds from scratch and salvage. What parts five players would perform\, he performs alone. The spectacle of his one-man set bears comparison to legends of showmanship\, brilliance\, madness\, and invention. While audiences are captivated by that solitary form and the show itself\, Lorenz\, who homesteads in Western Massachusetts\, is most serious about the songs. Over the course of six full-length releases\, including the latest The End is New from Renew Records at BMG\, he has written a world into existence\, crowded with characters\, narratives\, voices\, imagery\, sounds as wide and varied as mountain throat singers and roadhouse juke boxes\, plus newsreels of the planet’s destruction and salvage.

Hours are Friday 2-7 p.m.\, Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.\, and Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. \nThe show\, now in its 17th year\, raises the boating public’s awareness of the many talented\, smaller\, independent boat builders located on Cape Cod\, the South Coast and the South Shore. \nThe three-day event is one of the few remaining boat shows in the country dedicated solely to providing boat owners\, boat buyers and those individuals interested in boats and boat building with the opportunity to participate in a truly unique show experience. Show visitors get the chance to talk to each builder – the people who create and construct the many beautiful boats that will be on display. This assembly of builders have worked in all boat building processes. \nOther show exhibitors include marine-related businesses from sail makers to those in engine repair and re-powering\, nautical books\, coatings\, marine technology\, pennants and flags\, marine canvas and more. \nOn Saturday at 2 p.m.\, the show welcomes speaker\, experienced captain and sailing journalist Ronnie Simpson. He is a combat-wounded Iraq war veteran and marine industry professional who will share his interesting and inspirational story of how sailing and boating has changed his life. A Portland\, Maine based sailor with more than 175\,000 miles at sea\, Simpson sailed an Open 50 in the previous edition of the Global Solo Challenge but unfortunately it was dismasted\, and the boat was lost off the coast of Argentina after racing more than three quarters around the globe. He is determined to finish the Global Solo Challenge race.  \nShow admission is $10 and children under 12 are free.  A ticket to the show includes admission to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum\, 135 South Street\, Hyannis (www.capecodmaritimemuseum.org) Follow the show on Facebook (Boatbuilders Show on Cape Cod) and Instagram (boatbuildersshowcapecod.)

SUMMARY:The Boat Builders Show
DESCRIPTION:The Boat Builders Show on Cape Cod returns January 30 – February 1 at the Hyport Conference Center\, 35 Scudder Avenue in Hyannis\, MA. The combined experience of the exhibitors covers all types of boat construction from plank-on-frame to molded fiberglass to cold-molded composite construction.
