SUMMARY:Preserving our Land and Life
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition centered on Cape Cod’s Cold Brook Preserve. Managed by the Harwich Conservation Trust\, the Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve protects —wildlife habitat\, water quality\, and walking trails. Cold Brook flows through the 66 acres of wetlands and uplands to Saquatucket Harbor on Nantucket Sound. \nA botanist’s delight\, the Preserve hosts more than 280 plant species and 36 nestboxes home to bluebirds\, iridescent blue-green tree swallows and other feathered residents. \nThe reception will include original works created en plein air as well as using reference from studio work based on photographs and trail cams that have captured animals at night and in motion. Music by Cape favorite Sarah Burrill. \nA paint out will bring many artists painting together at the Preserve on Friday\, June 19th. \nArtist Andrea Petitto\, manager of the trail cams\, and Helen Addison have worked with dozens of artists creating distinct works of this intriguing area.

SUMMARY:The Edward Gorey House Book Club: Pride Month
DESCRIPTION:Each month\, Books\, Please! The Edward Gorey House Book Club meets — at the House and in an online setting — to discuss some of Gorey’s favorite authors and his literary influences. This year’s Books\, Please!‍ Pride Month pick is Virginia Woolf’s Orlando\, a love letter formatted as a fictional accounting of English literary history through the perspective of an ageless genderfluid poet. Yes; it is all that\, and more. \nA powerful modernist novel about gender (or possibly about something else entirely)\, Orlando chronicles the life of an ageless young man who\, about halfway through the book\, wakes up as a woman. Is it a piece of experimental historiography? Is it an ode to the literary history of England? Is it a strange\, extended love letter to Vita Sackville-West? Is it any good at all? Find all this out and more on June 24th. \nPlease note that this book contains racist imagery\, some of a graphic nature. Read with caution.

SUMMARY:Pride Month Movie Night with the Edward Gorey House
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday the 28th from 6:30-8:30 p.m.\, in recognition of Pride Month\, the Edward Gorey House and Thacher Hall will be screening the 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock. \nConsidered by the Australian Film Institute to be the best Australian film of all time (and they probably know what they’re talking about)\, Picnic at Hanging Rock – based off Joan Lindsay’s novel of the same name – is a diaphanous\, haunting Gothic mystery that follows a group of Edwardian-era schoolgirls on a St. Valentine’s Day outing where they mysteriously vanish. The fear\, despair\, and eventual madness that follows their disappearance plays out in sunshine-soaked vignettes and extremely starched white ruffles. Incredibly atmospheric and shot through with adolescent sapphic repression\, Picnic at Hanging Rock is one of the most beautiful – and most unnerving – films ever made.
