Our speaker Kevin McLain\, the Executive Director of the Orpheum\, will give us a tour through the remarkable history of the Theater\, one of Main Street’s greatest landmarks. He will walk visitors through its opening\, closing\, and triumphant return to a vital cultural institution in Chatham. \nThis lecture will take place on site at the Orpheum Theater. \nAbout Kevin McClain: \nIn 2013 after 15 years as Director of Technical and Creative Services for Chatham Bars Inn\, he became the Executive Director of the newly restored Chatham Orpheum Theater. Over the last 12 ½ years he has turned the historic theater\, built in 1916 into one of the top independent\, community theaters in the country. With a focus on the community\, the theater has hosted hundreds of fundraisers and events for local groups and non-profits. In 2021 Kevin was given the Fred Ebbett Lifetime Achievement Award by the Cape Cod Baseball League in recognition of his 20 years as producer of the annual Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame ceremony. \nAbout The Orpheum Theater: \nThe original Orpheum Theater opened in 1916 as Chatham’s first and only movie house.  From the early days of silent films through the blockbuster era of JAWS\, our Main Street movie theater was a magical place for 72 years — a year-round destination where generations of Cape Cod families and summer visitors could enjoy gripping dramas\, slapstick comedies\, joyous musicals or swashbuckling adventure films week after week. \nIn 1938\, the building was purchased by Interstate Theaters Corporation and became known as the Chatham Theater.  Then in 1987\, like so many village movie theaters on Cape Cod\, it ceased operations\, went dark\, and eventually became a CVS pharmacy. The entire town mourned the loss of this iconic Main Street treasure\, but the tradition was never forgotten. \nThe return of the Chatham Orpheum Theater began in November 2011\, right after CVS vacated the historic theater building at 637 Main Street.  A local grass roots team was quickly formed and established a non-profit organization with an audacious goal:  To raise funds needed to buy the original Orpheum building and bring back movies to Main Street.\nLed by founding president Naomi M. Turner and a local team of volunteers\, the first $1.3 million was raised to purchase the building in April 2012.  The team then launched a more daunting challenge — raising the projected $4 million needed to restore and rehabilitate the 100-year-old wooden structure as a modern\, first-class cinema that would feature first-run major motion pictures plus art house movies\, independent productions\, provocative documentaries\, and the works of local filmmakers.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Talks: Russ Cohen: Nibbling on the Wild Landscape of Cape Cod
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our November ‘Tuesday Talks’ lecture on Tuesday\, 11/18\, at 5pm with Russ Cohen. The Cape is home to over 100 species of edible wild plants\, many of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. These include native species\, like Fox Grape and Beach Plum; non-native weeds\, like Chicory and Burdock; and invasive species\, like Autumn Olive and Japanese Knotweed. Join Russ Cohen\, author of the book Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten\, to learn about at least two dozen of the tastiest wild plant species the Cape has to offer. These include species everyone knows well\, like Daisies and Dandelions\, to species people may have never even heard of\, like Wild Raisin and Carrion Flower. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided\, along with info on edible portion(s)\, season(s) of availability and preparation methods\, as well as guidelines for safe\, ethical and environmentally-responsible foraging. Russ’s talk will include handouts and samples to nibble on.\nAbout Russ Cohen:\nUntil his retirement in June of 2015\, Russ Cohen’s ‘day job’ was serving as the Rivers Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration\, where one of his areas of expertise was in riparian vegetation. Now Russ has more time to pursue his passionate avocation\, which is connecting to nature via his taste buds\, and assisting others in doing the same.  In addition to leading over three dozen wild edibles-themed walks and talks each year at a wide variety of venues throughout the Northeast\, Russ has now taken on a role of Johnny Appleseed for edible native species. He has set up a small nursery (in Weston) where he grows/keeps plants that he propagates from seed (some of which he collected himself). He is then collaborating with land trusts\, cities and towns\, schools and colleges\, state and federal agencies\, Tribal members and groups\, organic farms and others to plant plants from his nursery in appropriate places on their properties.

He will tell us about his work as a tour guide and researcher of paranormal activity in and around the Cape! \nTour guide and lecturer\, Derek Bartlett of West Barnstable\, is president of the Cape and Islands Paranormal Research Society\, and has been studying the paranormal for years; he founded Barnstable Haunted Tours in 2001. Chatting about his hobby with others years ago\, Bartlett says people began to ask him to bring them around—and pretty soon he had a small business underway. Today\, some 400 people take part in the tours he gives each summer. We are thrilled to have him come speak at the Atwood Museum.

She has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony and spent several seasons with the Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera. She has also appeared as a soloist and orchestral member with numerous ensembles. Originally from Boston\, Ilana began the violin at the age of 3 and has not stopped since. We cannot wait to hear her perform!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our September ‘Tuesday Talks’ lecture on Tuesday\, 09/09\, at 5pm with Dr. Michael Pregot. Dr. Pregot will be discussing his new book\, Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod. Books will be available for purchase and signing afterwards.\nMichael Pregot is an educator\, writer\, and admirer of local history. Dr. Pregot has intensely researched this subject to create a comprehensive examination of this often-overlooked part of Cape Cod history. The book discusses religious views\, political platforms\, economic factors\, and social movements that existed during the pre-Civil War period to help readers gain insight into the mindset of the era. It also highlights several profiles of notable Black enslaved individuals living in Massachusetts and demonstrates the enormous contributions they made to the overall growth of our state and country.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of classical music at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. The Atwood Museum is welcoming back award-winning Georgian-American pianist\, Ana Glig (Gligvashvili). Ana is a pianist and teacher who has performed in solo\, chamber\, and orchestral settings in the United States and Europe. Glig is recognized for her “virtuosic command” and ability to “capture hearts”. Glig currently lives on Cape Cod\, where she performs\, teaches\, and works as a Music Director at the First United Methodist Church in Chatham.\nAccompanying Ana is renowned cellist\, Jacques Lee Wood. Mr. Wood exhibits a dynamic\, expressive\, and thoughtful style. He has garnered attention as a soloist\, recitalist\, and chamber musician of the highest caliber. From a musical family of Korean and European heritage\, he began his music studies from a young age – first on the violin\, then on the cello. Mr. Wood has traveled the world performing solo\, recital\, and chamber music concerts collaborating often with some of the world’s finest musicians.
