DESCRIPTION:Come join us as we celebrate the holiday season!\nFree admission for all! \nSaturday\, December 13th \n10am – 4pm \nOn Saturday\, December 13th from 10am-4pm the museum will be open with FREE admission for all. Stop by and celebrate the holiday season with us! The hearth of the Old Atwood House will be ablaze with yuletide cheer. The house will be merrily bright and beautifully decorated inviting you to step back in time. Light refreshments and warm beverages will be served in the spirit of hot chocolate and warm mulled cider. A bell choir will be performing holiday songs throughout the event in our Mural Barn. Please dress warmly and bring good cheer! \nBesides the decorated Old House\, we will also have several galleries open and our Gift Shop will be having its annual\, Historic Hauls sale. Our unique Chatham books and curiosities make special holiday gifts. We will be collecting new hats\, gloves\, mittens\, and scarves for children in need\, and non-perishables and canned goods will be collected for Cape Cod Family Pantry. \nAfter December 13th the museum will reopen in May 2026! SUMMARY:Tuesday Talks: Russ Cohen: Nibbling on the Wild Landscape of Cape Cod
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our November ‘Tuesday Talks’ lecture on Tuesday\, 11/18\, at 5pm with Russ Cohen. The Cape is home to over 100 species of edible wild plants\, many of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. These include native species\, like Fox Grape and Beach Plum; non-native weeds\, like Chicory and Burdock; and invasive species\, like Autumn Olive and Japanese Knotweed. Join Russ Cohen\, author of the book Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten\, to learn about at least two dozen of the tastiest wild plant species the Cape has to offer. These include species everyone knows well\, like Daisies and Dandelions\, to species people may have never even heard of\, like Wild Raisin and Carrion Flower. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided\, along with info on edible portion(s)\, season(s) of availability and preparation methods\, as well as guidelines for safe\, ethical and environmentally-responsible foraging. Russ’s talk will include handouts and samples to nibble on.\nAbout Russ Cohen:\nUntil his retirement in June of 2015\, Russ Cohen’s ‘day job’ was serving as the Rivers Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration\, where one of his areas of expertise was in riparian vegetation. Now Russ has more time to pursue his passionate avocation\, which is connecting to nature via his taste buds\, and assisting others in doing the same.  In addition to leading over three dozen wild edibles-themed walks and talks each year at a wide variety of venues throughout the Northeast\, Russ has now taken on a role of Johnny Appleseed for edible native species. He has set up a small nursery (in Weston) where he grows/keeps plants that he propagates from seed (some of which he collected himself). He is then collaborating with land trusts\, cities and towns\, schools and colleges\, state and federal agencies\, Tribal members and groups\, organic farms and others to plant plants from his nursery in appropriate places on their properties.

Derek will regale us with spooky tales of haunted happenings\, stories\, and locations of people and places around Cape Cod. He will tell us about his work as a tour guide and researcher of paranormal activity in and around the Cape! \nTour guide and lecturer\, Derek Bartlett of West Barnstable\, is president of the Cape and Islands Paranormal Research Society\, and has been studying the paranormal for years; he founded Barnstable Haunted Tours in 2001. Chatting about his hobby with others years ago\, Bartlett says people began to ask him to bring them around—and pretty soon he had a small business underway. Today\, some 400 people take part in the tours he gives each summer. We are thrilled to have him come speak at the Atwood Museum.

She has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony and spent several seasons with the Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera. She has also appeared as a soloist and orchestral member with numerous ensembles. Originally from Boston\, Ilana began the violin at the age of 3 and has not stopped since. We cannot wait to hear her perform!

Books will be available for purchase and signing afterwards.\nMichael Pregot is an educator\, writer\, and admirer of local history. Dr. Pregot has intensely researched this subject to create a comprehensive examination of this often-overlooked part of Cape Cod history. The book discusses religious views\, political platforms\, economic factors\, and social movements that existed during the pre-Civil War period to help readers gain insight into the mindset of the era. It also highlights several profiles of notable Black enslaved individuals living in Massachusetts and demonstrates the enormous contributions they made to the overall growth of our state and country.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of classical music at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. The Atwood Museum is welcoming back award-winning Georgian-American pianist\, Ana Glig (Gligvashvili). Ana is a pianist and teacher who has performed in solo\, chamber\, and orchestral settings in the United States and Europe. Glig is recognized for her “virtuosic command” and ability to “capture hearts”. Glig currently lives on Cape Cod\, where she performs\, teaches\, and works as a Music Director at the First United Methodist Church in Chatham.\nAccompanying Ana is renowned cellist\, Jacques Lee Wood. Mr. Wood exhibits a dynamic\, expressive\, and thoughtful style. He has garnered attention as a soloist\, recitalist\, and chamber musician of the highest caliber. From a musical family of Korean and European heritage\, he began his music studies from a young age – first on the violin\, then on the cello. Mr. Wood has traveled the world performing solo\, recital\, and chamber music concerts collaborating often with some of the world’s finest musicians.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, July 8th\, for our July ‘Tuesday Talks’ lecture with military historian\, Joe Yukna. The lecture\, entitled ‘Gunpowder and Greasepaint’ is perfect for a diverse audience. Joe will tell a story that takes you from the firing range at Scorton Neck to the stage lights of Broadway! \nCome and hear the thrilling tale of how the 1st Composite Anti-Aircraft Demonstration Battalion\, Royal Artillery\, and star of stage and screen\, Gertrude Lawrence\, came together on Cape Cod in 1943. Joe will also be displaying items from CCMM for folks to look at before and after the talk. \nAbout Joe Yukna: \nJoe Yukna’s interest in the military history of Cape Cod began when he worked as a Department of Defense Police Officer on Camp Edwards/Otis ANGB in the late 1980s. Joe Yukna with colleague Jerry Ellis then embarked on a venture to create a military museum. They secured two barracks and six surrounding acres on Camp Edwards for the project. September 11th ended that venture. After a hiatus\, they got back to work. Yukna has been collecting artifacts and information on military activities here on the Cape and the overseas activities of units that trained here. He has also helped various historical societies with military displays. After leaving the D.O.D. Police force\, Joe started his own dog training business and is better known as ‘Joe the Dogman’. He is the son of a WWII /Korean War Navy Veteran and the Father of an Army War on Terror Veteran.

SUMMARY:Hearthwarming at the Atwood Old House
DESCRIPTION:Come join us as we celebrate the holiday season! \nOn Saturday\, December 12th from 10am-4pm the museum will be open with FREE admission for all. Stop by and celebrate the holiday season with us! The hearth of the Old Atwood House will be ablaze with yuletide cheer. The house will be merrily bright and beautifully decorated inviting you to step back in time. Light refreshments and warm beverages will be served in the spirit of hot chocolate and warm mulled cider. A bell choir will be performing holiday songs throughout the event in our Mural Barn. Please dress warmly and bring good cheer! \nBesides the decorated Old House\, we will also have several galleries open and our Gift Shop will be having its annual\, Historic Hauls sale. Our unique Chatham books and curiosities make special holiday gifts. We will be collecting new hats\, gloves\, mittens\, and scarves for children in need\, and non-perishables and canned goods will be collected for Cape Cod Family Pantry.  \nAfter December 14th the museum will reopen in May 2025! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear author\, William Martin\, speak about his latest work. William Martin’s latest has been called “propulsive\,” “pedal-to-the-floor\,” and “absolutely splendid\, a cinematic thriller that takes us across the United States” in the first days of the war. In November’s ‘Tuesday Talks’ lecture\, William Martin will discuss the fascinating historical context of the era of his new book and introduce us to some of the featured players\, including FDR and Churchill\, the Nazis of Southern California\, a few movie stars\, and the first readers of the script that became Casablanca. \nThe book\, DECEMBER ’41\, begins on the day after Pearl Harbor\, as a German agent evades an FBI dragnet in Los Angeles and heads for Washington. His assignment? To kill Franklin Roosevelt when the president appears before 20\,000 Americans to light the National tree on Christmas Eve. If he succeeds\, he’ll change the course of history. \nThe lecture begins at 5pm on Tuesday\, November 12th\, and is held in the Mural Barn at the Atwood Museum located at 347 Stage Harbor Road in Chatham. DESCRIPTION:Come experience the Atwood Museum’s version of a haunted house with our Halloween event\, Shipwrecked: A Haunted Night at the Atwood Museum. Wear your best costume and join other event goers for a spooky evening of food\, drink\, and lore. Guests can choose from the 5:30pm or 7:00pm entry time. Your timed entry will include both a journey through our museum’s haunted halls and a sea shanty soiree complete with Halloween-themed treats and refreshments. Enjoy a mix of both scare and show as professional actors frighten and delight with stories of Cape Cod shipwrecks past in our hour-long event! While costumes are not required\, they are strongly recommended! \nRefreshments\, treats\, and tour are included with the price of admission.  \nThe event will take place at the Atwood Museum\, located at 347 Stage Harbor Rd.\, Chatham MA. Parking will be available on site. Entrance to the event will be through the Mural Barn. Tickets are $45/person and are available on our website at chathamhistoricalsociety.org.
