The MLK Action Team is the racial justice arm of the Nauset Interfaith Association working in partnership with the people of Cape Cod. Their mission is to address systemic racial injustice through education and building transformative relationships. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nCelebrating the steelpan’s versatility in Caribbean (reggae\, soca\, calypso)\, Afro-Caribbean\, contemporary jazz\, soul\, fusion and classical music styles– is the essence of PanNeubean Steel. Jefferey Clayton (Cape Cod native\, musician\, artist and educator) founded the band to share his passion for music and personal Jamaican culture– and this is evident through his enthusiasm and dedication to sharing his heritage. \nWith music Clayton found his voice and many opportunities\, and his steelpan adventure began when he enlisted into the United States Army as a trumpet player. After completing three active years he obtained a degree in Sociology\, concentrating on social equity and inclusion in hope of providing greater opportunity for those who are under represented or excluded. DESCRIPTION:Two true blues artists — James Montgomery and Kevin Burt — are taking the stage at Provincetown Town Hall on Saturday\, April 13 for a Payomet Road Show that no blues fans will want to miss! \nJames Montgomery has been an iconic figure in blues music for more than 40 years\, as an accomplished blues harpist\, singer\, frontman\, bandleader and composer– and he’ll co-headline the evening with Kevin Burt\, who for more than 25 years\, has been electrifying audiences throughout the Midwest dispelling the myth that true blues has no roots in Iowa.  \nIt is said that when blues legend James Montgomery plays the harmonica\, he “brings it on home.” Whether it’s recording with Kid Rock\, sitting in with Gregg Allman\, or fronting his hot band of thirty years\, Montgomery plays with authority. While growing up in Detroit he\, learned first-hand from the masters – James Cotton\, John Lee Hooker\, and Jr. Wells – at the legendary “Chessmate.” Over the years\, he’s carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in Blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene. \nKevin Burt’s soul-inspired performances are unique\, which consistently gets him compared to a range of artists like Bill Withers and Aaron Neville\, with the ability to build an audience rapport that has been compared to B.B. King. Burt is a musician (vocals\, harmonica\, and guitar) whose smooth\, warm vocal presentation and humor audiences of all ages seem to enjoy. Two of Kevin’s primary influences are Bill Withers and Aaron Neville and he has the ability to build a great rapport with the audience with his soul-inspired presentation and natural stage presence.

His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker\, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes\, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. \nJake Blount’s new album\, The New Faith\, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways. The New Faith is spiritual music\, filled with hope for salvation and righteous anger in equal measure. The album manifests our worst fears on the shores of an island in Maine\, where Blount enacts an imagined religious ceremony performed by Black refugees after the collapse of global civilization due to catastrophic climate change. Jake Blount’s music is rooted in care and confrontation. On stage\, each song he and his band play is chosen for a reason – because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment. DESCRIPTION:Acoustic roots music supergroup Mr. Sun will be joining us at Wellfleet Preservation Hall on Tuesday\, December 5\, performing off their new release: Mr. Sun Plays Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite. This concert was curated in collaboration with Paul “DJ Pablo” Greenspan of Global Grooves radio on WOMR\, as part of a new Global Roots Music Series. \nAmerican Roots Music thrives on growing new branches from its grand traditions\, and the band Mr. Sun\, and its individual members\, have long been actively re-shaping the acoustic musical landscape. For Mr. Sun’s tenth anniversary\, this celebrated company of virtuoso string players has reinterpreted the legendary Ellington/Strayhorn Nutcracker Suite\, bringing this monumental reimagining of the iconic Tchaikovsky piece into the acoustic string band world. \nTchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite contains some of the most beloved and familiar melodies in the Western world. Mr. Sun has seized upon the inspiration of Duke Ellington’s brilliant\, sly\, and urbane re-interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Suite\, recorded in 1960 to universal acclaim. Mr. Sun took the opportunity to salute and re-invent this wildly multi-faceted work anew through the lens of the American String Band\, a musical format that encompasses myriad styles and is engaged in a marathon upheaval of innovation and expansion. In Mr. Sun’s new reading\, the pieces of the Suite range from close interpretations of Billy Strayhorn’s original charts to intense extrapolations based on the spirit of the material.

DESCRIPTION:You might recognize Kat Wright as the headliner earlier this year at the Cape Cod Women’s Music Festival– well\, we enjoyed her so much\, so we’re bringing her back for a visit to Cape Cinema on Sunday\, November 26 for a matinee Road Show. \nAfter touring for the last decade as a soul band with many horns & keys blazing\, this new era finds Kat Wright being born anew – more herself than ever – revealed\, simply in a startlingly honest & glimmering naked light. With restrictions imposed by the pandemic\, Wright & her cohorts have come to enjoy writing & touring in a stripped down formation\, mostly trio or quartet\, in contrast to the big band she fronted for the better part of the last decade where she was described “a young Bonnie Raitt meets Amy Winehouse”. Fans of Wright’s singing & style have been thrilled to discover this paired down line up which puts the groups true talents front & center to shine\, instead of drenching them in horns and fanfare. You’ll still hear the Raitt & Winehouse influences\, but now also likenesses with Brandi Carlisle & Norah Jones. The resulting music is more intentional\, more distilled\, more potent – a direct balm for the trying times we face today. It’s truly a scenario of “less is more” – allowing Wright’s voice to really finally take center stage\, to shine and ache and yearn and howl – unburied\, out in the open\, beaming.
