What type of gardens did early colonials have in the 1700s? Have you ever wanted to plant your own miniature garden? Come to our Young Colonial Gardeners session and find out! \nOpen to children of all ages\, and a perfect activity while parents peruse the museum! Come explore within the Atwood gardens\, learn about gardening in Colonial times\, and even plant a potted mini garden that kids can take home for themselves! We will explore a variety of herbs and spices grown in our real garden where kids will be able to touch\, feel\, and dig. \nYoung Colonial Gardener sessions will be offered on both Friday and Saturday of Historic Chatham Weekend from 10:30am-12:30pm on both days. Tickets are $5 per person and are available at the door.

DESCRIPTION:Please join National Park archeologist\, Dan Zoto\, on March 25th at 5PM for an exciting ‘Tuesday Talks’. Dan will discuss his work for the National Park Service as well as provide an overview of archeology at the Cape Cod National Seashore. Dan will explain how the park conducts archeology within a cultural resource management framework such that it ensures the protection of its archeological resources. The talk will summarize past and present archeological research and provide insights into Native American and Euro-American land use on the Outer Cape. Dan will also be open to questions and discussion at the end of his presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Come join us as we celebrate the holiday season! \nOn Saturday\, December 12th from 10am-4pm the museum will be open with FREE admission for all. Stop by and celebrate the holiday season with us! The hearth of the Old Atwood House will be ablaze with yuletide cheer. The house will be merrily bright and beautifully decorated inviting you to step back in time. Light refreshments and warm beverages will be served in the spirit of hot chocolate and warm mulled cider. A bell choir will be performing holiday songs throughout the event in our Mural Barn. Please dress warmly and bring good cheer! \nBesides the decorated Old House\, we will also have several galleries open and our Gift Shop will be having its annual\, Historic Hauls sale. Our unique Chatham books and curiosities make special holiday gifts. We will be collecting new hats\, gloves\, mittens\, and scarves for children in need\, and non-perishables and canned goods will be collected for Cape Cod Family Pantry.  \nAfter December 14th the museum will reopen in May 2025! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

In November’s ‘Tuesday Talks’ lecture\, William Martin will discuss the fascinating historical context of the era of his new book and introduce us to some of the featured players\, including FDR and Churchill\, the Nazis of Southern California\, a few movie stars\, and the first readers of the script that became Casablanca. \nThe book\, DECEMBER ’41\, begins on the day after Pearl Harbor\, as a German agent evades an FBI dragnet in Los Angeles and heads for Washington. His assignment? To kill Franklin Roosevelt when the president appears before 20\,000 Americans to light the National tree on Christmas Eve. DESCRIPTION:Description:\nWe Still Live Here – Âs Nutayuneân is the story of the revitalization of the Wampanoag language\, the first time a language with no native speakers has been revived in this country. The Wampanoag’s ancestors ensured the survival of the Pilgrims in New England and lived to regret it. Nevertheless\, through resilience and courage they kept their identity alive and remained on their ancestral lands. Now a cultural revival is taking place. \nThe story begins in 1994 when Jessie Little Doe\, an intrepid\, 30-something Wampanoag social worker\, began having recurring dreams: familiar-looking people from another time addressing her in an incomprehensible language. Jessie was perplexed and a little annoyed — why couldn’t they speak English? Later\, she realized they were speaking Wampanoag\, a language no one had used for more than a century. \nThese events sent her and members of the Aquinnah and Mashpee Wampanoag communities on an odyssey that would uncover hundreds of documents written in their ancestral language\, lead Jessie to a earn herself a master’s degree in linguistics at MIT\, and result in something that had never been done before – bringing a language alive again in an American Indian community after many generations with no native speakers. With commitment\, study groups\, classes\, and communitywide effort\, many are approaching fluency. Jessie’s young daughter Mae is the first native speaker in more than a hundred years. \nAbout the filmmaker:\nAnne Makepeace has been a writer\, producer\, and director of award-winning independent films for more than 20 years. Her films include We Still Live Here – Âs Nutayuneân which won the Full Frame Inspiration Award and the Moving Mountains Prize at Telluride MountainFilm; I.M. Pei: Building China Modern\, (PBS/American Masters 2010); Rain in a Dry Land (lead show on P.O.V. 2007) winner of the Full Frame Working Films Award\, Emmy nomination; Robert Capa in Love and War\, (PBS/American Masters 2003)\, national Prime Time Emmy Award; Coming to Light (PBS/American Masters 2003)\, short-listed for an Oscar and winner of many prizes; and Baby It’s You (lead show on P.O.V. 1998)\, Whitney Biennial 2000. SUMMARY:Evening of Jazz with Summer Camargo and Jason Anick & Henry Acker Quartet
DESCRIPTION:For our second outdoor concert of the summer\, we are honored to host Summer Camargo and the Rhythm Future Quartet. Join us under the tent on the Atwood front lawn for some drinks and a wonderful evening of jazz music. \nSummer Camargo: Summer Camargo is a trumpet student at The Juilliard School\, a Jerome Greene Fellowship recipient\, and is in her fourth year of college majoring in Jazz Studies. Born and raised in Hollywood\, Florida\, Summer recently joined Lenny Pickett and The Saturday Night Live House Band on NBC\, recorded her debut album under Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Blue Engine\, won first place in the International Trumpet Guild’s Ryan Anthony Trumpet Memorial Competition\, covered for Wynton Marsalis on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s 2022 Big Band Holidays Tour\, and has been performing with her sextet in prestigious venues in NYC such as Dizzy’s and Birdland. She is the first ever triple crown winner in the history of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington\, winning in 2018 the Ella Fitzgerald Best Soloist award\, the J. Douglas White Student Composition Contest\, and winning first place in the festival with her high school\, Dillard Center for the Arts. \nJason Anick & Henry Acker Quartet: The acoustic jazz ensemble has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome\, named for a Django Reinhardt tune\, offers up a newly minted sound\, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France\, yet wholly contemporary. Founded by violinist Jason Anick\, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. With Max O’Rourke\, Henry Acker\, and Greg Loughman rounding out the quartet\, they are dedicated to expanding the boundaries of a vital musical genre.

SUMMARY:Outdoor Concerts at the Atwood Series: The Bluegrass Bash: Monica Rizzio and the Tom Hagerty Band
DESCRIPTION:For our first outdoor concert of the summer\, we are honored to host Monica Rizzio and the Tom Hagerty Band as our two performers for the evening. Join us under the tent on the Atwood front lawn for some drinks and a wonderful evening of bluegrass music. \nMonica Rizzio: No stranger to the local music scene\, Rizzio is an award-winning songwriter and brings her alt-country original music inspired by her Texas upbringing and years spent in Nashville to the shores she now calls home. Rizzio is a versatile musician\, touring across the country on her own; she also plays fiddle and guitar with Tom Rush and owns and teaches at Washashore Music in Orleans. \nThe Tom Hagerty Band: Tom Hagerty leads one of the very first bluegrass bands to perform regularly on Cape Cod. He and his band have performed at many venues and festivals across the Cape. \nJoin us for the Atwood Museum’s first outdoor concert\, Bluegrass Bash\, on Thursday\, July 11th. DESCRIPTION:The talk will trace the 50-year history of The Chatham Railroad from 1887 to 1937\, including its key role in the mobility of Chatham’s residents and the advancement of the town’s economy. The talk will also draw on the photographic collection of the Chatham Railroad Museum to illustrate the stations on the line\, the equipment used\, the route of the railroad\, and its connection to the national railroad system.
