Come listen to Lee Roscoe speak about her new book and appreciation of Wampanoag culture. Lee Roscoe beautifully articulates the tribe’s spiritual and material lifeways through their arts. She had access to the foremost creative artists thanks to her decades of involvement with the Wampanoag people on Cape Cod.  The Martha’s Vineyard Gazette\, writes of the book: “the balance of text\, testimony and pictures is perfectly struck…That human element is the book’s key stroke of genius.” The book is an Eric Hoffer award finalist. \nThe lecture begins at 5pm and is held in the Mural Barn at the Atwood Museum located at 347 Stage Harbor Road in Chatham. DESCRIPTION:Hailed by John Williams as “an outstanding cellist and truly dedicated artist”\, cellist Emmanuel Feldman is known for his intense soulful playing and vibrant career working as a soloist\, chamber musician\, composer\, and inventor.\nPianist Joy Cline Phinney\, a native of Boulder\, Colorado\, has appeared in solo and chamber music recitals across the United States and in Europe.  Notable concerts include a guest appearance with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players; a return engagement on the New York Philharmonic Merkin Hall Concert Series; annual performances as a member of the faculty at the Sarasota Music Festival and the Cremona International Academy in Italy; and many more. \nCome listen to these impressive artists as they play duets throughout the evening in the Atwood Museum! Tickets are $25 and are available on our website. The concert begins at 6:30PM and doors open at 6PM. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments will be served. We cannot wait to see you there!

DESCRIPTION:For our second outdoor concert of the summer\, we are honored to host Summer Camargo and the Rhythm Future Quartet. Join us under the tent on the Atwood front lawn for some drinks and a wonderful evening of jazz music. \nSummer Camargo: Summer Camargo is a trumpet student at The Juilliard School\, a Jerome Greene Fellowship recipient\, and is in her fourth year of college majoring in Jazz Studies. Born and raised in Hollywood\, Florida\, Summer recently joined Lenny Pickett and The Saturday Night Live House Band on NBC\, recorded her debut album under Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Blue Engine\, won first place in the International Trumpet Guild’s Ryan Anthony Trumpet Memorial Competition\, covered for Wynton Marsalis on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s 2022 Big Band Holidays Tour\, and has been performing with her sextet in prestigious venues in NYC such as Dizzy’s and Birdland. She is the first ever triple crown winner in the history of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington\, winning in 2018 the Ella Fitzgerald Best Soloist award\, the J. Douglas White Student Composition Contest\, and winning first place in the festival with her high school\, Dillard Center for the Arts. \nJason Anick & Henry Acker Quartet: The acoustic jazz ensemble has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome\, named for a Django Reinhardt tune\, offers up a newly minted sound\, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France\, yet wholly contemporary. Founded by violinist Jason Anick\, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. With Max O’Rourke\, Henry Acker\, and Greg Loughman rounding out the quartet\, they are dedicated to expanding the boundaries of a vital musical genre.

Join us under the tent on the Atwood front lawn for some drinks and a wonderful evening of bluegrass music. \nMonica Rizzio: No stranger to the local music scene\, Rizzio is an award-winning songwriter and brings her alt-country original music inspired by her Texas upbringing and years spent in Nashville to the shores she now calls home. Rizzio is a versatile musician\, touring across the country on her own; she also plays fiddle and guitar with Tom Rush and owns and teaches at Washashore Music in Orleans. \nThe Tom Hagerty Band: Tom Hagerty leads one of the very first bluegrass bands to perform regularly on Cape Cod. In this multimedia presentation using lots of video and images\, we will be introduced to new concepts like playing Jazz on a conch shell\, “Jazz for Cows” and “Snowball\, the dancing cockatiel.” Do animals have an innate sense of music?  \nWe will discuss the difference between the art and science of bird songs\, meet Mozart’s pet Starling and see how Mozart incorporated his song into a composition. But in Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony\, the pastorale you will learn how Beethoven weaves together bird songs into an exciting solo section for his masterpiece. The event is on April 9th from 5pm to 6pm. SUMMARY:Tuesday Talks: Julie Gerstenblatt: Every Great Fire Begins with a Tiny Spark
DESCRIPTION:While Gerstenblatt has been writing in various forms for years\, Daughters of Nantucket marks her debut as a traditionally published author at 52 years old. Gerstenblatt will explain how she took the seed of an idea from history and developed it into a novel. She will discuss her writing process and the creation of her characters\, and touch on the novel’s structure while highlighting some of the research involved. This conversation will be lively and engaging and will speak to both readers and aspiring novelists. The talk will be followed by an audience Q and A and book signing. \nJulie Gerstenblatt holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Teachers College\, Columbia University and has taught everything from middle school to graduate school and indoor cycling. Her essays have appeared in The Huffington Post and Grown & Flown\, among others. When not writing\, Julie is a college essay coach. A native New Yorker\, Julie now lives in coastal Rhode Island with her family and one very smart poodle mix. She likes to say that she moved from New York to Rhode Island to get closer to Nantucket\, where she has been vacationing since the 1970’s. Daughters of Nantucket\, which received a starred review from both Booklist and Shelf Awareness and has been included on several “most anticipated” lists for 2023\, is her debut novel.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Talks: Rick Nye: Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge: An Exploration of its Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:An overview of the plants\, habitats & wildlife\, how we manage it\, and how people can see some of it themselves. \nAbout Rick Nye:\nRick Nye grew up in Piscataquis County\, Maine where he explored the woods and streams surrounding his hometown and occasionally riding his bike to Sebec Lake for a swim.\nHe graduated from Albright College in Reading\, PA\, with a B.S in Biology in 1995. His extracurricular activities included crawling through caves in Pennsylvania and West Virginia while conducting woodrat and bat research.\nAfter earning his degree\, Rick followed in the footsteps of three previous generations of his family and served in the U.S. Military. As a Naval Cryptologic Officer\, he worked at the National Security Agency\, NATO’s Implementation Force (IFOR) in Bosnia-Herzegovina\, commissioning crew of the USS McCampbell (DDG 85)\, Naval Security Group Activity Hawaii\, and Provincial Reconstruction Team\, Farah\, Afghanistan. Rick’s experiences in other countries reminded him of the importance of protecting our natural resources.\nSo\, Rick decided to reconnect with his original career goal of being a biologist and attended California State University\, Fullerton. His studies focused on genetics\, marine ecology\, and the biogeographical distribution of marine invertebrates living in the rocky intertidal coast of California. During this time\, Rick also volunteered with the National Marine Fisheries Service in Orono\, Maine\, analyzing data for Atlantic salmon and other species found in the Gulf of Maine.\nRick started volunteering at Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge (SBNWR) in 2010. His work included habitat restoration\, endangered species monitoring\, and predator management. In October 2015\, he was hired to manage a project that raised the elevation of a saltwater marsh to counteract rising sea levels. Rick was selected to be the Refuge Manager in 2017 where he led dozens of volunteers in contributing over 4\,000 hours of work per year in support of the Refuge’s mission. He also coordinated research with professors and students from area universities\, consulting firms\, and other government agencies.\nHe arrived at Monomoy NWR in June 2021 as the new Refuge Manager just in time to see the National Weather Station building be torn down. Since then\, he has been working to manage the retreat of Refuge operations away from the eroding coastline. Simultaneously\, Rick has also ensured that biological program continued to function with little to no impact of its capabilities.

Please dress warmly and bring good cheer. \nBesides the decorated Old House\, we will also have several galleries open and our Gift Shop will being having its Annual Historic Hauls sale.
