SUMMARY:Perla Batalla: A Letter To Leonard Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Perla Batalla has forged a reputation as an essential interpreter of Leonard Cohen’s music– and she’ll share her gift with us under the tent on Tuesday\, August 5. \nWhile today Grammy®-nominated singer-songwriter Perla Batalla can be found sharing the stage with musicians such as Nick Cave\, Rufus Wainwright\, and Jackson Browne\, it was Perla’s early years touring with the celebrated Canadian poet Leonard Cohen that shaped her as an artist in her own right. \nPerla was born in L.A. to an immigrant family immersed in music. Her Afro-Mexican dad was a mariachi singer\, while her Argentine mom ran the family record shop called Discoteca Batalla. \nGrowing up there\, Perla was exposed to non-stop music cutting across language and genre. Left alone in the shop after school\, she began dreaming of one day becoming a singer. Against her parents’ wishes\, she left home at 16\, studying opera during the day and performing in clubs at night. \nSince then\, Perla Batalla has performed in venues as varied as Sydney Opera House\, Kennedy Center\, Royce Hall\, and Brighton Dome. She has released seven albums and cowritten and appeared in two one-woman shows: her celebrated Mestiza song cycle\, exploring the intricacies of being a person of mixed race\, and Blue House\, an exultant Frida Kahlo musical commissioned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and tapped for production by Ojai Playwrights Conference.

SUMMARY:The Dirty Rotten Vipers and Funktapuss
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, August 3rd the stage is set for a night of unstoppable grooves and electrifying energy as two powerhouse bands join forces for an unforgettable co-billed event: The Dirty Rotten Vipers and Funktapuss. \nHailing from the streets of New Orleans\, The Dirty Rotten Vipers bring their signature “gutter jazz” straight from the French Quarter to our stage. This twelve-piece ensemble is notorious for their high-voltage performances that weave together traditional jazz with punk\, cabaret\, and Southern soul. Their dynamic horn section\, rich harmonies\, and captivating storytelling will transport you right to a street corner in NOLA—where the music is wild\, the stories are real\, and the spirit is unstoppable. Experience the raw magic of their debut album “Tip The Band” live\, with original tunes and covers that’ll hit you right in the soul. \nSharing the bill is Cape Cod’s own Funktapuss\, a band whose name is as funky as their sound. Known for igniting the dance floor with their infectious blend of funk\, soul\, jazz\, hip-hop\, rock\, and R&B\, Funktapuss delivers a party atmosphere wherever they play. Whether they’re putting their spin on Stevie Wonder classics or grooving through their own originals\, this band is all about getting you up and moving. Fresh off the festival circuit and some of the Cape’s favorite venues\, they’re ready to bring their signature energy and fun to the night. \nTwo bands. One stage. Get ready to dance!\nDon’t miss this rare chance to catch the swampy\, brass-driven storytelling of the Dirty Rotten Vipers alongside the unstoppable grooves of Funktapuss. Whether you’re a jazz head\, a funk fanatic\, or just looking for a good time\, this is the show you’ve been waiting for.

SUMMARY:Walter Parks & The Unlawful Assembly
DESCRIPTION:We experienced Walter Parks & The Unlawful Assembly at a small club in New York City and almost instantly\, we knew we needed to bring them to the tent– and they’re coming Monday\, July 21. \nThe Unlawful Assembly reimagines and tributes historic spirituals and hymns which universally inspire\, empower and unite. Leader/guitarist/singer Walter Parks\, longtime sideman to Woodstock legend Richie Havens\, is joined by featured artists drummer/producer Steven Williams\, Ada Dyer on vocals who’s currently touring worldwide with Bruce Springsteen (!) and Andrae Murchison on trombone. \nIn the span of one concert\, The Unlawful Assembly entertains and informs while successfully melding roots music of divergent origins. The soundtrack to American black history – old-school spirituals\, gospel\, blues\, and prison work chants intertwine with swamp hollers\, shaped-note hymns and Appalachian reels of white homesteader origin. \nParks’ native northeast Florida swampy feel borrows from southern rock\, jazz\, early 70’s soul and few gospel interpretations that rest joyfully upon a foundation of modern electronic loops.

SUMMARY:Galactic
DESCRIPTION:Legendary New Orleans funk collective Galactic is headed to the tent on Thursday\, July 10– and you’re personally invited to come out to Truro and get funky with us! The band will be accompanied by vocalist Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph at this show. \nOver the course of three decades\, Galactic has become a cornerstone of New Orleans’ dynamic music landscape – the same world that brought them together in the ‘90s as a late-night funk outfit steeped in the unique sounds of their city. \nThe musically adventurous group has evolved continuously since then\, thanks in part to their penchant for collaborating with a wildly diverse array of guest artists. While those experiences have provided a steady stream of new musical perspectives and ideas to the group’s core sound\, other elements of their work – like their new role as stewards of the historic New Orleans music venue Tipitina’s – have deepened their relationship with their city and its music community through the years\, giving the band an even richer foundation for their ongoing explorations of new creative terrain. \nAudience With the Queen\, Galactic’s forthcoming studio album with New Orleans rhythm and blues legend Irma Thomas\, exemplifies all of that progress and more. Out this spring\, the new album features Thomas’ Grammy-winning vocals on every track\, marking a departure from their 10 previous studio LPs\, most of which revolved around the band’s core instrumentalists – Ben Ellman (saxophones\, harmonica)\, Rob Mercurio (bass)\, Stanton Moore (drums)\, Jeff Raines (guitar) and Rich Vogel (keyboards) – accompanied by a mix of different vocalists\, including Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph and Josh Cagler. awards and\, just a few years ago he was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a Member for the National Council on the Arts. \nTicket Price: $48-$78* // Members: $44-$72\n*Note that ticket prices will increase day-of-show

SUMMARY:Couch
DESCRIPTION:Boston-based band Couch returns to our tent on Sunday\, June 29 for a dance party. Couch is known for their signature flavor: expressive horns\, warm vocals\, and bubbling synths—crafting an oasis of joy for musicians and non-musicians alike. \nFrom the beginning Couch’s formation in 2019 until spring 2021\, members of Couch were scattered across the country; they tackled the challenges of being a “long-distance band\,” writing and even recording virtually. Despite these challenges\, they celebrated the release of their debut EP\, “COUCH\,” in February 2021 as well as three singles and a 20-city headline tour in 2022.

SUMMARY:Eilen Jewell
DESCRIPTION:Queen of the Minor Key\, Eilen Jewell is bringing her rootsy retro stylings to the Truro this fall on Sunday\, September 29 for a matinee performance under the tent. \nHailed by American Songwriter as “one of America’s most intriguing\, creative\, and idiosyncratic voices\,” Eilen Jewell rises from the ashes on her captivating new album\, Get Behind The Wheel\, picking up the pieces of her shattered world and finding new purpose and meaning after watching her marriage\, her band\, and what felt like her entire career fall apart in a series of spectacular\, heartbreaking implosions. Co-produced by multi-instrumental wizard Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider\, Hayes Carll)\, the collection pushes the acclaimed singer and songwriter’s trademark blend of vintage roots-noir into more psychedelic territory\, with spacious\, cinematic arrangements complementing her revelatory explorations of grief\, loss\, resilience\, and redemption. \nAn Idaho native\, Jewell built her career the old fashioned way\, touring relentlessly with the kind of undeniable live show that converts the uninitiated into instant acolytes. Over the course of nine albums\, she’s crisscrossed the globe countless times and shared bills with the likes of Lucinda Williams\, Loretta Lynn\, Mavis Staples\, Wanda Jackson\, George Jones\, and Emmylou Harris. Rolling Stone lauded Jewell’s “clever writing\,” while NPR declared that she has a “sweet and clear voice with a killer instinct lurking beneath the shiny surface\,” and The Washington Post mused that “if Neko Case\, Madeleine Peyroux and Billie Holiday had a baby girl who grew up to front a rockabilly band\, she’d probably sound a lot like Eilen Jewell.”\n\nTicket Price: $25-$40* // Members: $22-$36\n*Note that ticket prices may increase day-of-show

SUMMARY:The Slambovian Circus of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss New York’s Slambovian Circus of Dreams under the tent on Saturday\, September 28– a band who have been coloring ‘outside the lines’ of the Americana genre with their fantastic stories and performances since forming 20 years ago in the Hudson Valley of New York. Their Woodstock-tinged psychedelia has a hint of southern rock\, celtic and British folk combined with solid songwriting – a slice of Americana pie that is irresistable! \nExploring the depths of Americana with an artful edge\, elements of Dylan\, Bowie\, Incredible String Band\, Syd Barrett\, and The Waterboys flavor the musical mix. Joziah Longo (the resident shaman of Slambovia)\, leads with vocals described as “soothing and bewitching as a snake oil tonic.” Longtime bandmates Tink Lloyd (accordion\, cello\, mandolin\, flute) and guitarist/mandolin wizard Sharkey McEwen bring their own magic to the Slambovian brew with “a little help from their friends” RJ McCarty (keys\, bass\, sax)\, Bob Torsello (bass)\, and Matthew Abourezk (drums).

SUMMARY:José James
DESCRIPTION:The historically and musically significant year of 1978 is also the year José was born in Minneapolis\, and now\, is the title of his twelfth album. \nReleased this past spring\, 1978 features 9 transcendent tracks that capture José James at a mid-career apex\, craftily overlapping Soul\, Hip-Hop\, Jazz and other Jazz-adjacent styles into a fully realized album of remarkable focus. The songs range from the deeply personal intimacy to politically minded and message-driven. The grooves stretch from edgy and resolute\, to relaxed and seductive. The performances are supported by a lean-and-lithe lineup of young talent and unexpected collaborators: guitarist Marcus Machado (who has played with Robert Glasper and Anderson .Paak)\, keyboardist Chad Selph (Lalah Hathaway\, Bilal)\, bassist David Ginyard (Solange\, Blood Orange)\, drummer Jharis Yokley (Chance the Rapper\, Ani DiFranco) and featured guest on various tracks\, Latin conguero Pedrito Martinez. \n“This kind of band\, small and tight\, is how I stay connected to my jazz essence\,” states James. “They can play anything. Everything we tracked\, we did with everyone looking at each other in the studio. “I wanted that live feeling\, like we’re discovering it for the first time.” \nJosé James’s 1978 draws its power from both a timeless relevancy and a deep sense of the personal. It is a richly layered musical statement connecting both to the present day\, and to past sounds and styles as well—a sincere and seductive valentine to his love of jazz\, soul and hip-hop. \nTicket Price: $35-$55* // Members: $32-$48\n*Note that ticket prices may increase day-of-show
