People Power, Trees and Seeds: Biodiversity and Food Security in East Africa

May 7 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Come to the Craine Room of Snow Library to hear Taona Makunje, co-founder of Creative Solutions for Malawi, talk about her large-scale application of restoration agriculture in Malawi villages in successful efforts to improve food security and restore forested areas. Restoration agriculture is an ecological farming approach that addresses climate and food insecurity by focusing on the biodiversity of farm ecosystems. The Food Forest Initiative of Cape Cod (FFI) has created three public gardens on Cape Cod demonstrating this approach in our communities, bringing to light a new method that can help manage Cape Cod’s food security.

Taona is an inspirational speaker and certified Permaculture Trainer who has partnered with the Food Forest Initiative to bring this program to Snow Library. Since 2016, the volunteer organization Food Forest Initiative of Cape Cod has planted public gardens full of native plants for food and wildlife habitat. Permaculture and restoration agriculture are the frameworks that inspire their work. Taona is a certified permaculture teacher and the initiator of visionary projects in Malawi that use these same frameworks for action to address multiple problems of poverty, loss of biodiversity, and climate instability, involving teamwork and creativity.

Admission is free and all are welcome. Sponsored by the Food Forest Initiative of Cape Cod with the Orleans Farmers’ Market.
