History of Russia and Ukraine

Dr. Adele Barker is Professor of Russian/Slavic Studies, Emerita at the University of Arizona. Barker has friends and professional colleagues in Russia and has been there many times herself. She describes some of the current opinions Russians have and the reasons behind them.

Barker further discusses history shared by Russia and Ukraine, including Russia’s and Ukraine’s mutual origins, religious and cultural influences in these two societies, current stances of the Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox churches, what is meant by a Russian Ethnic, and some context for Putin’s vision of empire that denies Ukraine’s independent and separate statehood.
