A discussion about the Russian view of the Ukrainian invasion including some historical background. Dr. Adele Barker is Professor of Russian/Slavic Studies, Emerita at the University of Arizona. Barker, who has friends and professional colleagues in Russia and has been there many times herself, describes some of the current opinions Russians have and the reasons behind them. Barker further discusses history shared by these two lands, including:
– Russia’s and Ukraine’s mutual origins
– Religious and cultural influences
– The current stances of the Russian and Ukrainian
Orthodox churches
– What is meant by a Russian Ethnic
– Some context for Putin’s vision of empire that denies Ukraine’s independent and separate statehood
