Explore the Rich Tapestry of Sacred American Music with Joseph Marchio: Four-Session Series Begins June 5
Music lovers and history enthusiasts are invited to embark on an inspiring journey through the diverse landscape of sacred American music in a special four-part series led by acclaimed conductor, educator, and storyteller Joseph Marchio. The sessions will be held at the Center for the Spiritual Journey on 4 consecutive Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:30 AM, June 5, 12, 19, and 26.
This engaging series, “Sacred American Music with Joseph Marchio,” will explore the spiritual sounds that have shaped American faith communities, from the haunting beauty of Shaker hymns and the choral traditions of the Moravians, Mennonites, and Amish, to the profound legacy of slave spirituals, gospel music, and the unique art of shape-note singing. The final session will delve into the fascinating world of Appalachian serpent handling, one of the most distinctive and discussed traditions in American religious music.
Joseph Marchio, Assistant Conductor of the Cape Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Chatham Chorale, brings a wealth of expertise and passion to the series. With degrees from the College of Wooster, Yale University, and Boston Conservatory, Marchio is celebrated for his dynamic teaching style, deep knowledge, and ability to connect with audiences of all backgrounds. He is also Pastor and Director of Music at the First Congregational Church of Chatham and has presented more than 100 online lectures on music and culture, making him a sought-after guide for this musical exploration.
Each session is $15, or $50 for the full series of four. Participants are encouraged to register early to secure their spot and experience this entertaining and enlightening tour through the sacred music traditions that continue to inspire and unite communities across America.
